College Students With ADHD Add Tips: ADHD ADD. The right college?

If your goal is college, look for a college that is both a good acedemic fit and a good social/emotional fit. Size and location can directly impact your success- big schools in distant locations overwhelm some ADHD ADD students; other ADHD ADD students find the new enviroment and diversity stimulating. Choose a school with ADHD ADD support services and programming, such as academic assistance and study skills support.

College Students With ADHD Add Tips: Going away to college

College presents many new challenges to every student, and even more to the ADD student, especially if they are living on campus. Make sure that they are super organized when they move in – both backpack and dorm room. See if you can arrange to have an organized friend as a roommate. Also work out a system to help them remember important things such as medication and homework.

As you and your child begin the search for a college, don’t forget to take his ADD into consideration. The transition to college is difficult for any teenager, but even more so for those with ADD. The college catalog should contain information about tutoring and other learning assistance programs available to its students. If it doesn’t, contact the admissions office and ask.

Becalmd Tips: Having problems sleeping? Becalm´d can help

Serotonin is the brain chemical (neurotransmitter) which enables sleep. Melatonin triggers it. Most people who have sufficient serotonin but can’t sleep for a lack of Melatonin, do not in fact lack Melatonin , they simply release it at the wrong time. Consistant sleep time habit patterns will often solve this problem.

If the problem is a genuine lack of serotonin, the precursors (nutritional “raw materials” needed by the brain to manufacture adequate serotonin) must be supplemented. The raw material for serotonin is l-tryptophan, an essential amino acid. In such cases, doctors often prescribe pharmaceutical grade l-tryptophan. A much less expensive approach is to eat ham, turkey, or most fat containing diary products.(Think about what happens after Thanks Giving Dinner.) As these foods are highly caloric and high in cholesterol producing agents, one usually wishes to minimize the intake of such foods. To do this an adult needs to take 50 mg of calcium and 25 mg of magnesium three times a day and then, only small amounts of tryptophan containing foods..

The serotonin shortage may have another cause. If a person’s GABA or Opioid levels are low the release of serotonin may be modulated down. This cause of a lack of available serotonin has the same effect as a lack of available l-tryptophan. Thus, the most prudent solution is to supplement with the precursors for all three. To do so, one needs l-glutamin, d/l-phenylalanine, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin M (Folic acid), and trace chromium. All of these can be obtained at nearly any health food store and most pharmacies.

Another frequent cause of a lack of sleep is minor aches and pains. These might be caused, for instance, by unusual exercise, severe psychological stress, minor accidents, etc. In such cases, either aspirin or acetominephen (e.g. Tylenol) combined with d/l-phenylalanine has been described as being an excellent analgesic (pain reducer.)

You may find purchasing all of the above (except the aspirin or ascidaphenamin) in one capsule a more convenient and less expensive solution. beCALM’d is such a product.

ADHD And Self Esteem Tips: Praise the Unique ADD/ADHD child

Your child knows that they are different. In school they are singled out as “trouble makers” “disobedient” or “not performing up to their potential.” I am sure you can remember sometime when you felt left out and unwanted. This usually happens with the ADD/ADHD child. Most people around them are focusing on what they are not doing or should be doing. This can lead to a very frustrating day that can result in a poor self image. To help counter this let them know they are wonderful just the way they are. Tell them how much you enjoy being their parent. Let them know that they make your life more wonderful because they are your child & there is not another person you would choose for that role. It gives the child a “boost” & makes them feel special. This also sets the ground work for them wanting to do their best in school & at home. Let them know you appreciate them just the way they are. This will not only let the child know you believe in them but it will also create a deeper bond between the both of you that will last a lifetime.

ADHD And Self Esteem Tips: ADHD child & Self Esteem

Kids with ADD ADHD often have low self-esteem. Struggles with school, social situations and feeling different can all contribute. One of the best ways to boost self-esteem in a child is to help them find something that they’re good at – sports, art, dancing, whatever. Take the time to find that special something. To excel in something, be proud of themselves and be looked up to by others can be an invaluable gift.

ADHD Add Symptoms Checklists Evaluations Tips: Detecting the ADHD Student in Middle School

(Adjusting to Middle School) – Hitting the wall
If behavior is not a problem, kids with ADHD may go undiagnosed for years, relying on memory and intelligence to get by in school. Eventually they “hit the wall” and these skills no longer work. Rapidly declining grades, failure to turn in assignments or poor organizatonal skills all signal a need for a closer look, and maybe an evaluation for ADHD or a learning disability.

ADHD Add Symptoms Checklists Evaluations Tips: Hyperactivity- Impulsiveness Check list

ADD/ADHD Self Test
Standard Diagnostic Criteria for
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
in Children and Adults

IMPORTANT: This is not a tool for self-diagnosis. Its purpose is simply to help you determine whether ADD/ADHD may be a factor in the behavior of the person (adult or child) you are assessing using this checklist. An actual diagnosis can be made only by an experienced professional.

Hyperactivity-Impulsiveness

Six or more of the following symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity have persisted for at least 6 months to a degree that is maladaptive and inconsistent with developmental level:

Often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat.
Often leaves seat in classroom or in other situation in which remaining seated is expected.
Often runs about or climbs excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate (in adolescents or adults may be limited to subjective feelings of restlessness.)
Often has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly.
Is often “on the go” or often acts as if “driven by a motor.”
Often talks excessively.
Often blurts out answers before questions have been completed.
Often has difficulty awaiting turn.
Often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., at school or work and at home.)

Additional Considerations

Some hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive symptoms that caused impairment were present before age 7 years.
Some impairment from the symptoms is present in two or more settings (e.g., at school or work and at home.)
There must be clear evidence of clinically significant impairment in social, academic or occupational functioning.
The symptoms do not occur exclusively during the course of a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Schizophrenic or other Psychotic Disorder and are not better accounted for by another mental disorder (e.g., Mood Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Dissociate Disorder or a Personality Disorder.)
